The Rise of Agricultural Drones.

With the vastness of rolling countryside in Dumfries & Galloway, has always provided landowners and farming professionals with a challenge. Monitoring, assessing and maintaining such large areas is always problematic, until the arrival of UAV’s (commonly known as drones) transformed everything.

Crop management

For arable estates, flying a UAV across miles of planting makes sense. Tractors and even quad bikes cause damage and are time-consuming to operate and fuel. Where a farmer needs to assess fertilizer yield, the correct sensors fitted to a drone can check the crop density. This allows for a quick response to ensure that all areas of planting are healthy and progressing ready for harvest.

The technological advances made by UAV’s means that reliance on manual methods or even satellite surveillance is diminishing. UAV’s can fly for longer, lower, and cloud cover is not an issue to getting the required data. With vastly improved image resolution, operators can easily identify unwanted weed growth. This can then be effectively targeted.

Livestock and maintenance

Top-quality video camera capability means stunning detail can be achieved quickly and efficiently. Video can enable livestock managers to make informed decisions about stranded or injured animals. Aerial surveillance is non-intrusive, so information can be gathered with alarming livestock. There are also many security benefits!

UAV’s offer outstanding flexibility, especially where extreme conditions exist. Where flooding occurs, an aerial resource enables continuous monitoring where land-based vehicles would be largely obsolete.

Busy in the workshop

Rain may stop flying but keeping busy in the workshop & office..

With an increase in the requirement to machine carbon fibre sheet and light alloy plates, we are building a bespoke CNC mill for this purpose. With a 24,000 RPM spindle and cutters ranging from 0.8mm to 6.0mm, we will now be able to produce items a lot more efficiently.

It is expected that the new machine will be commissioned later this week and we’ll show some footage of it earning it’s keep.

Working safely…

Yesterday, we were at Dumfries and Galloway College with Graham from GE- Photography to do some filming for College Marketing.
However after anemometer tests – wind speeds were beyond safe boundaries as per operating parameters of Aerospec. Job abandoned for another day when Mother Nature is on our side.
